Given my obsession with this beautiful June birthstone, it comes as no surprise that Pearls are one of my most favourite to design, to make and to wear.
Cultured pearls are grown in pearl farms, and are the direct result of human intervention. The vast majority of pearls in the pearl/jewelry market are cultured pearls. Cultured pearls may be bead nucleated, tissue nucleated or otherwise non-bead cultured, and they are produced in both saltwater and freshwater mollusks.
Pearls are truly special and add charming sophistication to both your everyday wear and formal occasions. However, these pretty unique masterpieces of nature require special care and attention if you want to cherish them for long.
Here’s how to keep pearls in superb condition:
- Avoid contact with cosmetics, lotions, perfumes and hair spray.Pearls should be worn after the perfumes and lotions dry.
- Household cleaners, detergents contain harsh chemicals. Make sure you take off your pearls and in fact, any jewelry, specially rings. It's best to protect them from chemicals that will break their natural nacre and dull their lustre.
- Also always protect your pearls from over-exposure to strong light and dry heat.
- During traveling, if you have your pearls with you, it's best to hand carry them or store them in a soft pouch or jewelry box
